How can you tell the Caliber of a bullet with just the casing?
I have casing that is approx 4.5 cm long, approx 0.9 cm diameter, and approx a 3.4 circumference; can anyone help me out?
If the caliber isn't stamped on the head, then get out your calipers and measure. Approximate lengths can give you an approximate idea. Exact measurements can tell you exactly. For instance, I'd almost bet it's a rimless, bottlenecked case and the diameter at the head is probably 9.6 mm. That's standard for most of the 5.56 mm cartridges. If it's 9 mm at the shoulder, and that shoulder is 36.53 mm from the head, then you're likely dealing with 5.56x45 NATO (223 Remington).
